About Apollo Health and the Bredesen Protocol
Apollo Health, based in the US, describes itself as a “medical information company that uses high-tech software to provide solutions for one of the leading causes of death worldwide.” To many thousands of people globally, it is so much more than that as the science underpinning its offering has saved many families from the devastating impact of Alzheimer’s. It has also provided me with hope as I try to break the cycle of Alzheimer’s running down the maternal line in my family.
Its Chief Medical Officer is Dr. Bredesen whose research found that Alzheimer’s results from an imbalance in the brain’s neuroplasticity signalling. In simple terms, the brain loses its ability to grow and reorganise itself as damaging forces overtake repair processes. As I’ve already previously mentioned, Alzheimer’s is a multi-faceted disease with many different possible reasons for this imbalance. The goal of the Bredesen protocol is to change and balance your biochemistry to provide optimal conditions for your brain to thrive. This is accomplished by identifying and addressing all the contributors (or potential contributors) to cognitive decline while at the same time optimizing your overall health to keep your brain healthy.
We would all like to be able to take a magic pill for Alzheimer’s and know that it has us covered but the reality is that, despite the billions ploughed into research, pharmaceutical trials for Alzheimer’s have failed repeatedly. There are a few drugs that you might have come across, Lecanemab and Donanemab for example. They have shown some success in slowing the progression for a small percentage of patients but by no means are they a cure.
The Bredesen approach takes a different direction, using precision-based medicine to identify and address the root causes of the disease in each patient. A peer-reviewed study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease in August 2022, “Precision Medicine Approach to Alzheimer’s Disease: Successful Pilot Project,” demonstrated that, of the 25 participants taking part in the trial, 21 demonstrated improvement (84%), one showed no change and three declined. Other trials are ongoing and in the meantime, there are many recorded experiences of people following the protocol and seeing huge improvements in their cognition. Apollo’s has two key programmes: ReCODE (Reversal of COgnitive DEcline ) and PreCODE (Prevention). There are both sometimes referred to as the Bredesen protocol).
ReCODE
This programme is for individuals experiencing symptoms classified as Subjective Cognitive Impairment (SCI), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. It is also recommended for people who carry the ApoE4 gene and who have a strong family history of Alzheimer’s. To understand what is driving the decline, participants undergo extensive laboratory testing, cognitive assessments, and medical questionnaires to generate a personalized ReCODE Report. Testing includes a whole range of biomarkers from inflammation to insulin resistance and hormonal imbalances to toxins and everything in between. The report provides tailored and detailed recommendations to optimise brain health.
PreCODE (Prevention of Cognitive Decline)
PreCode is designed for individuals who are at risk of developing cognitive issues but are not yet experiencing symptoms. This preventive programme leverages the same scientific principles as ReCODE, focusing on early identification and mitigation of risk factors and promoting a brain-healthy lifestyle, including a ketogenic diet, regular exercise, stress and sleep management, supplements, brain stimulation and detoxification strategies.
